Erection Problems in Your 20s: Causes and What to Do

· 6 min read

You're 25 and you're having erection problems. If you think this only happens to men over 40, you're not alone, but you're wrong. Age is no longer an excuse, and it isn't a protection either.

In an Italian study of men seeing a doctor for new erectile dysfunction, one in four was 40 or younger, and almost half of these younger men had severe ED. The good news is that the earlier a problem is spotted, the easier it is to solve.

Why it happens in younger men

Erections depend on your brain, nerves, blood vessels and hormones working together. Modern life puts pressure on all of them, regardless of age.

  • Chronic stress and anxiety, including worry about performance itself
  • Sitting for eight to ten hours a day and getting little exercise
  • Excess weight, which affects blood vessels and lowers testosterone
  • Poor or short sleep, which reduces testosterone production
  • Heavy pornography use, which can change how you respond to a real partner
  • Smoking, alcohol and recreational drugs, which younger men with ED use more often than older men

Irregular eating, chronic stress and inactivity also quietly affect the testicles and hormone production. Being young won't protect you here, but a healthy lifestyle will.

Is it physical or psychological?

In younger men, stress and anxiety are common causes, but they are not the only ones. A useful clue is whether you still wake up with erections and can get an erection on your own. If you can, the blood vessels are probably working, and the cause is more likely psychological.

If you are unsure, a nocturnal erection test measures the erections your body produces during sleep, when stress can't interfere. It gives a clear answer about your vascular health.

What helps

  • Move more and sit less: regular exercise improves blood flow and testosterone
  • Sleep seven to eight hours a night
  • Cut down on alcohol, stop smoking and avoid recreational drugs
  • Lose excess weight, especially around the belly
  • Talk about performance anxiety, with your partner or with a professional

If lifestyle changes aren't enough, a medical assessment checks hormones and blood flow. Treatments such as shockwave therapy (ESWT) suit mild to moderate, blood-flow-related ED, and sex therapy helps when anxiety is the main driver.

Don't be embarrassed: act early

Erection problems in your 20s or 30s can be an early warning sign of blood vessel or hormone problems that will matter for your overall health later. Getting checked is not an overreaction.

Frequently asked questions

Is it normal to have erection problems at 25?

Occasional problems are normal at any age. If it happens regularly for a few months, it's worth getting checked. In one study, a quarter of men seeking help for new ED were under 40.

Can porn cause erectile dysfunction?

Heavy use is linked with difficulty getting aroused with a partner in some men. Cutting down often helps, along with addressing stress and anxiety.

Will it go away on its own?

Sometimes, especially when the cause is temporary stress. If it continues, an assessment can find the cause, and treatment is usually easier the earlier you start.
