My Erection Was Fine Yesterday. Why Not Today?
· 5 min read
Your erection was great yesterday. Today, nothing. Is this a sudden resignation by your most reliable organ, or a reversible warning?
In most cases it is neither a disaster nor a mystery. An erection isn't just physical: it is produced jointly by your nervous system, your blood vessels and your mind, and any of them can have an off day.

Common reasons for a one-off failure
- Stress at work or at home
- Tiredness or a bad night's sleep
- Alcohol, even a few drinks
- Tension or an argument with your partner
- Pressure to perform, especially with a new partner
Any of these can cause a temporary loss of erection in a perfectly healthy man. If it happens now and then, it is usually psychogenic, meaning the mind rather than the body is the main cause.
The trap of worrying about it
One bad night can start a cycle. You worry it will happen again, the worry raises your stress, and the stress makes it more likely to happen again. This performance anxiety can keep a problem going even when your blood vessels are completely healthy.
When it's a warning sign
If the problem keeps happening, or your erections are gradually getting weaker, your vascular health should be checked. The blood vessels in the penis are small, so they often show signs of narrowing before the larger vessels of the heart do.
A nocturnal erection test can separate the two causes: it measures your erections during sleep, when stress and anxiety are switched off. Strong night-time erections point to a psychological cause; weak ones point to a vascular cause that needs treatment.
What to do
There is no need to panic. A check-up is all you need. It looks at your blood vessels, hormones and general health, and the result tells you whether you need treatment, reassurance, or help managing stress.

Frequently asked questions
Is it normal to lose an erection sometimes?
Yes. Stress, tiredness, alcohol and relationship tension can all cause a temporary loss of erection in healthy men.
How do I know if it's physical or psychological?
If you still wake with erections and the problem comes and goes, it is more likely psychological. If it is constant or getting worse, get your vascular health checked. A nocturnal erection test gives a clear answer.
